Wednesday Adult Study – The

Lutheran Church in America

Adult Bible Study

Wednesdays, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Beginning March 15

Much is said today about immigration.  Certainly great numbers of people emigrated to America.  Among them have been many Lutherans.  Lutherans came to America in the earliest colonial times long before the Revolution of 1776.  Lutherans brought their faith with them from Germany, Scandinavia, Poland, or Britain. Some of our direct Lutheran ancestors came to this land many years later.

But how was their faith to be expressed and how were their churches to survive in a new, challenging environment?  Would they remain distinctive in their Reformation doctrine and identity, or would the diverse cultural and theological forces on this continent re-shape them?

The Wednesday morning Adult Bible Study begins a fresh topic this Wednesday, March 15.  “The Lutheran Church in America” will explore a remarkable chronicle of an almost 400 year presence of Lutherans in the New World.  We can learn much from exploring the spirit, courage and history of Lutherans before us.  Often these believers failed.  Often they fought battles within and outside the church.  But the Lord preserves the faithful.  And their story comes down to us so we may learn of God's unfailing grace which has preserved the Lutheran faith to this day.

Some of the future topics:  1) Lutheran Colonists on the Hudson and Atlantic Seaboard   2) Crisis and Growth of the General Synod  3) Lutherans on the Frontier   4) Civil War and the Lutherans   5) The Struggle for Confessional Union.

Please consider yourself cordially invited to participate in this study every Wednesday morning, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  The class meets in the Immanuel great room, is taught by Pastor Reed, and intends to accent topics relevant to this 500th Lutheran Reformation anniversary year.
